HOW IT WORKS

EVALUATIONS

  • Ospreys does not make cuts.
  • We will place your son/daughter on an appropriate level team following an evaluation session.
  • Evaluation sessions are at the beginning of each season, and are closely managed by our coaching staff.
  • All players – current and new – must attend our evaluation sessions in order to be properly placed by our coaches.
  • Parents are welcome, and coaches and founders are always available for questions.
  • Evaluation fees are credited to season fees upon registration.

SEASON REGISTRATION

  • You are free to register for a given season any time prior to the registration deadline, but please remember the evaluation session is still required.
  • Please register for your Season at the Registration section of this website.

AAU MEMBERSHIP

  • Annual AAU Membership is nominal and is the responsibility of the parent/player
  • Membership is recommended for local tournaments but required for travel tournaments.
  • Please visit Register for your AAU Membership (aausports.org)
  • Please be sure to enter our AAU Club Code RSY95CB4

TEAMS

  • Team selection is at the discretion of our coaches, who have extensive experience with placement of players based on skill level and physical ability
  • We encourage parents/players to trust us with placement and take a week before contacting us with potential changes
  • Changes are understandable and we will do our best to accommodate needs within reason
  • At times, depending on illness, injury, or improvement, parents/players may from time-to-time be asked if they are willing to move teams
  • Our team levels generally follow the martial arts flow for level of competition:
    • White → Grey → Blue → Black
  • Beginning players (defined as not having played organized basketball with professional coaching) will generally be placed on White or Grey teams
  • Advanced players (defined as having played and contributed on organized teams with professional coaching) will most likely be placed on the Blue or Black teams

PRACTICES

  • Practices are generally scheduled for 3x/week: 2 weeknights and 1 weekend day if there is no tournament play
  • Practices are scheduled for 75-90 minutes
  • Practice times vary but generally begin between 4:30pm and 7:30pm
  • Practices are held at the Menlo School gym at 50 Valparaiso Ave, Atherton CA

COMMITMENT

  • Our recommendation is for players to attend at least 2 of 3 practices per week
  • Please note that playing time in tournaments may be impacted by commitment to attend practice
  • We believe basketball development follows a simple rule: “You get out of it what you put into it!”
  • Please be sure to notify coaches when you cannot attend a given practice
  • Please also note we will be polling players/parents regarding tournament availability, which is covered in more detail in the TOURNAMENT section below

TRAVEL

  • WBO teams have enjoyed trips to Portland, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles over the past several years
  • Travel to tournaments is determined by coaches and parents working in close alignment and are always “special situations”
  • We welcome the opportunity to bond, compete, and grow that travel tournaments allow for, and are always happy to discuss!

TOURNAMENTS

  • The vast majority of our weekend tournaments will be local in order to ease travel requirements for players, parents, and coaches alike.
  • Tournament enrollment will be communicated at the start of each season, and we will poll parents/players regarding availability on those weekends to ensure full rosters. Your communication is critical!
  • Tournament schedules are not determined by WBO; generally they are released on a Thursday night ahead of a given Saturday/Sunday event.
  • As soon as we are notified of our time/specific gym location for a given tournament, we communicate to parents and players as soon as possible
  • We recognize that sometimes – the luck of the draw! – parents may find out late Thursday night that the first game Saturday may be 8am…or 5pm! We apologize for this and obviously seek out those tournaments that represent minimal travel and optimal, consistent game times
